Terms of Service
Effective date: April 5, 2026 · Last updated: May 25, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the LAFwords application at app.lafwords.com and the website at lafwords.com (together, the "Service"), operated by LAFwords ("we," "us," or "our").
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
LAFwords is an AI-powered vocabulary learning platform for intermediate and advanced language learners. The Service allows you to build a personal vocabulary collection, study words through contextual example sentences and spaced-repetition review, and track your progress over time.
We use artificial intelligence to generate example sentences, pronunciation audio, and illustrations for vocabulary cards. While we strive for high quality, AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors, unnatural phrasing, or inaccuracies. You should use your own judgment when learning from this content. We provide a content flagging feature so you can report issues, and we continuously work to improve content quality.
2. Accounts
To use LAFwords, you must create an account. You agree to:
- Provide accurate and complete information when registering
- Keep your login credentials secure and not share them with others
- Notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access to your account
- Be responsible for all activity that occurs under your account
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account and use the Service.
3. Subscription and Free Trial
3.1 Paid Subscription
LAFwords is a paid subscription service. There is no permanent free tier. Beyond the free trial described in Section 3.2, continued use of the Service requires an active paid subscription.
Subscriptions are available on a monthly or annual billing cycle at the prices displayed on our website and within the app at the time of purchase.
3.2 Free Trial
New accounts include a 7-day free trial with full access to the Service. No payment method is required to start the trial — you provide payment details only if and when you choose to subscribe.
We do not automatically enroll trial users into a paid plan. If you do not start a subscription before the trial ends, your account will transition to a paused state as described in Section 4.5, rather than being charged.
3.3 Regional Pricing
We offer Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) discounts to make LAFwords accessible globally. Regional discounts are determined automatically based on your approximate geographic location and are applied at checkout. Discount eligibility is at our sole discretion, and we reserve the right to modify or discontinue regional pricing at any time.
3.4 Promotional Pricing
We may offer promotional pricing (e.g., founding member rates) from time to time. Promotional prices are valid for the period specified at the time of the offer. After a promotional period ends, your subscription will renew at the then-current standard rate unless you cancel.
4. Payments, Billing, and Account States
4.1 Merchant of Record
All payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as our Merchant of Record. When you subscribe, you are entering into a payment relationship with Lemon Squeezy, which handles billing, sales tax, VAT, and payment compliance on our behalf. By subscribing, you also agree to Lemon Squeezy's Terms of Service.
4.2 Billing Cycle and Renewal
Paid subscriptions are billed in advance on a recurring basis (monthly or annually, depending on your chosen plan). Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of each billing cycle unless you cancel before the renewal date.
The free trial described in Section 3.2 does not require a payment method and does not automatically convert into a paid subscription. You will only be charged after you actively choose to subscribe and provide payment details.
4.3 Failed Payments
If a recurring payment fails (for example, due to an expired or declined card), we will retry the charge over a short grace period (typically 3–5 days). During the grace period your account continues to function normally, and we will notify you so you can update your payment method. If we are unable to collect payment after the grace period, your account will transition to the paused state described in Section 4.5.
4.4 Cancellation
You may cancel your subscription at any time through the subscription management portal (accessible from your account settings). Upon cancellation:
- Your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period — you are not charged again, and you keep full access until that date.
- At the end of the paid period, your account transitions to the paused state described in Section 4.5.
- Your learning data (words, reviews, progress) is preserved — you do not lose your vocabulary collection.
4.5 Paused Accounts
When your subscription ends — whether because your free trial concluded without conversion, a recurring payment failed after the grace period, or you cancelled — your account enters a unified paused state rather than being deleted or downgraded to a free tier.
While your account is paused:
- Your vocabulary collection, learning progress, and account data are preserved.
- You can continue to browse your existing words and previously generated content (example sentences, pronunciations, illustrations).
- You can export your vocabulary data.
- The main learning functionality is frozen: review sessions and the creation of new vocabulary cards (which rely on AI generation) are unavailable until you reactivate.
- Spaced-repetition scheduling is paused while your account is paused, so no artificial review backlog accumulates during the gap — when you resume, you pick up where you left off.
To restore full access, subscribe to a paid plan from your account settings. Reactivation is intended to be a one-step return to your prior learning state.
4.6 Refunds
Because Lemon Squeezy is the Merchant of Record, refund requests are handled according to their refund policies. If you believe you are entitled to a refund, please contact us via the feedback form within the application, and we will work with you and Lemon Squeezy to resolve the issue. We generally honor refund requests made within 14 days of initial purchase or renewal, provided the Service has not been substantially used during that period.
5. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable laws
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems
- Abuse AI generation features (e.g., excessive automated requests, generating content unrelated to vocabulary learning)
- Circumvent rate limits, subscription requirements, or regional pricing controls (for example, by misrepresenting your location, creating multiple accounts to extend the free trial, or sharing a single account across multiple people)
- Use bots, scrapers, or automated tools to access the Service without our written permission
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Service
- Resell, sublicense, or commercially redistribute content generated by the Service
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 Our Content
The LAFwords name, logo, website design, application interface, and underlying software are owned by inMDsoft and protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or distribute our proprietary content without written permission.
6.2 Your Data
You retain ownership of the words and vocabulary collections you create. We do not claim intellectual property rights over your learning data. By using the Service, you grant us a limited license to process your data solely for the purpose of providing and improving the Service (e.g., sending your words to AI providers for content generation).
6.3 AI-Generated Content
Example sentences, pronunciation audio, and illustrations generated by the Service are created by third-party AI models. You may use this content for your personal learning purposes. Rights to AI-generated content are subject to the terms of the underlying AI providers (OpenAI and Prodia). You may not systematically extract, redistribute, or commercially exploit large volumes of AI-generated content from the Service.
6.4 Content Flagging
When you flag AI-generated content as incorrect or inappropriate, the feedback you provide (the flag type and optional comment) may be used to improve content quality for all users. This feedback is non-confidential and you grant us an unrestricted license to use it.
7. Open-Source Software Acknowledgments
LAFwords incorporates third-party open-source software components. We gratefully acknowledge the work of the authors and contributors of these projects. The full list of components and their license notices is maintained on our Open-Source Acknowledgments page.
8. Disclaimer of Warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
- The Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure
- AI-generated content will be accurate, complete, or free from errors
- The Service will meet your specific learning requirements or goals
- Defects in the Service will be corrected in any particular timeframe
AI-generated example sentences, pronunciation, and illustrations are provided as learning aids. They should not be relied upon as authoritative linguistic references. We encourage users to consult additional resources and use the content flagging feature to report issues.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, LAFwords and its owners, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of learning progress, arising out of or related to your use of the Service.
Our total cumulative liability for any claims arising from or related to the Service shall not exceed the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or liabilities, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you. In such cases, our liability will be limited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
10. Account Termination
10.1 By You
You may delete your account at any time from within the app. Upon deletion, your personal data will be removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy. If you have an active paid subscription, please cancel it before deleting your account to avoid further charges.
10.2 By Us
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, abuse the Service, or engage in conduct that we reasonably believe is harmful to other users or to our operations. Where possible, we will provide notice and an opportunity to remedy the issue before termination. In cases of severe or repeated violations, we may terminate immediately.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by posting the updated Terms on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. For significant changes that affect your rights or obligations, we will also notify you by email at least 14 days before the changes take effect.
Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes. If you do not agree with the changes, you should stop using the Service and delete your account.
12. General Provisions
- Governing law: These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
- Dispute resolution: Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service shall first be addressed through good-faith negotiation. If unresolved within 30 days, either party may pursue binding arbitration or file a claim in the courts of Maryland.
- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.
- Entire agreement: These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and LAFwords regarding the Service.
- No waiver: Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.
- Assignment: We may assign our rights under these Terms in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. You may not assign your rights without our written consent.
13. Contact Us
